Elyria, OH – The city of Elyria and Kinetic by Windstream, a leading communication services and entertainment provider, are pleased to announce they have entered into a strategic partnership to further digital transformation efforts, including access and training, for Elyria residents.
“Internet accessibility and computer skills are a necessity to be able to function in today’s society. Broadband Internet is the new transportation.” said Mayor Frank Whitfield “That’s why we are excited to have a partner like Windstream, who is willing to invest in our residents and their futures. Our goal is that every Elyria resident has computer skills, quality devices, and high-speed internet.”
Through the unique partnership, Kinetic by Windstream will fund computer training classes for Elyria residents, as well as a culminating 2021 Hackathon aimed at creating solutions to meet Elyria’s evolving needs.
“Our product is fast, reliable broadband, and our mission is to partner with customers and communities to connect them to what’s important,” said Susan Schraibman, president of state operations for Kinetic. “Public-private partnerships like this one are creative solutions to make sure every has access to the tools they need.”
With technology – from virtual school, online appointments, and increasingly digital services – on the rise as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Elyria prioritized digital transformation early, providing CARES Act funding to local agencies to improve technology infrastructures, provide WiFi hotspots, and devices.
To ensure Elyrians had the necessary skills to access these digital services, the City of Elyria partnered with Goodwill Industries of Lorain County in Fall 2020 to offer basic computer training classes and free laptops to over 100 Elyria residents.
With Kinetic by Windstream’s investment, classes will start the first week of May, and will continue until funds are expended. Classes will be held at various locations and times throughout the city, and include a range of topics, from basic computer literacy, to more advanced uses like Zoom, online shopping, and more.
To sign-up for free computer classes, call 440-305-0455 or visit elyriacares.com. When calling, residents should leave a voicemail with their name, number, and the best time to return their call.
Updated computer training class offerings, schedule, and locations are being finalized. Additional information will be provided in the coming weeks at www.cityofelyria.org.
