OVERVIEW
The City of Elyria Law Director’s Office serves the citizens of Elyria by defending the Charter and the Elyria Codified Ordinances.
WHAT WE DO
Prosecution
The Law Director’s Office is responsible for prosecuting misdemeanors including all traffic and criminal cases.
Victim Advocates
The Prosecution Division’s Victim Advocates represent victims in criminal matters.
Civil Division
The Law Director’s Office represents the City in all forms of civil litigation and provides legal advice for the City, City Council, Clerk of Council, Finance Director and the Civil Service Commission. In addition to the foregoing powers, the City Law Director represents the City in all matters and actions relating to: the annexation and detachment of territory; the liability of the City for injuries to persons or property alleged to have been caused by any wrongful acts of the City, its officers or employees; the appropriation of property in exercise of the power of eminent domain by the City; the validity of all bonds and notes issued by the City; and the levying of taxes and assessments by the City. The Law Director prepares or edits all legislation brought before City Council.
Due to legal constraints, the Law Department staff is unable to provide legal advice to residents concerning private legal disputes or any other private matters, such as property disputes or eviction proceedings.
