Dear Water Customers:
On October 8 and 9, 2024, the City of Elyria will be performing the final inspection of the transmission pipes from the Elyria Water Pumping Plant to the Elyria Water System. As part of this inspection, one of the major transmission lines that delivers water to Elyria Residents will be shut down for approximately 4 hours each day. We do not expect this to have any impact on customers, as water from our interconnection with Avon Lake/Lorain County Rural Water will be supplemented, as necessary.
It is possible that the temporary transmission main shutdown could cause discolored water and/or a temporary increase in lead levels in the drinking water.
As a standard practice the USEPA recommends the following actions to reduce possible lead exposure in the drinking water:
- If water has not been used for several hours, run the tap until there is a noticeable temperature drop. Then, run water for 30 seconds to 3 minutes before using it for drinking and cooling. This helps flush water that may have contained lead that may have leached from plumbing.
- Use cold water for cooking, drinking, and preparing baby formula. Boiling the water will not reduce lead levels.
- Clean your faucet aerators regularly.
