FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Elyria Continues Veterans Banner Program

The City of Elyria and the Elyria Council of Veterans are teaming together for the third year, to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to the streets of the city to honor our veterans.

Elyria Council of Veterans members last year raised enough funds to reduce the cost of each banner to $37.00 each. This year the cost will be only $35.00.

“Veterans should not have to pay over a hundred dollars for a banner” said the Commander of Elyria Council of Veterans, David K. Root. “With the donations from the members of the Council, banners will be affordable, and everyone will be able to remember and honor the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of our country.”

The city has made available more lamp posts in the downtown so there will be an additional 22 banners this year. Banners will be displayed on the lamp posts on Middle Avenue, 3rd Street, 2nd Street, Broad Street, and Kerstetter Way. They will be hung by the city in May and remain up until after Veterans Day in November.

“The Hometown Heroes Banner Program is not just a patriotic gesture, but a way for the city to show our appreciation for the sacrifices made by the veterans of Elyria.” Said Elyria Mayor, Kevin A. Brubaker. “I first saw the program while serving as Safety Service Director and got behind it immediately. Now, as the mayor, I want to ensure the program continues and grows.”

It is not necessary to purchase new banners each year. The city will continue to rehang a banner as long as it remains in good condition. They are estimated to last for 3-5 years depending on weather conditions each summer.

The banners are available to any veteran with ties, either past or present to the City of Elyria. Complete information and order forms can be found on the city website. www.cityofelyria.org/hometownhero
