The City of Elyria is sending important notifications to water customers regarding the potential presence of lead service lines in the City’s water infrastructure. While recent testing indicates Elyria’s water system does not contain actionable levels of lead or copper, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) requires that all water consumers across the country receive these notices if their homes are serviced by, or potentially serviced by, water lines that may contain lead. The City will begin to send the notification letters the week of October 21, 2024.

Not all Elyria water customers will receive a letter. The service lines in question were installed prior to national mandates regulating the use of lead in water lines. The lines are located on customers’ property between the water meter in the residence and the main lines in the street.  While residents who receive the notification are not required to replace their lines, assistance through the City of Elyria Engineering Department may be available if they choose to do so.

Like most public water system suppliers operating within an aging infrastructure the City of Elyria utilizes several methods to prevent lead from entering the distribution system, including the use of Orthophosphate. Regular testing is conducted to ensure Elyria’s water meets or exceeds all EPA standards. Results from this year’s tests again show that Elyria’s water system does not have any levels of lead or copper requiring action.

While these proactive measures mean the City of Elyria continues to deliver fresh, clean, and safe drinking water to residents every day, it is recommended that consumers are familiar with the EPA’s recommendations on how to reduce exposure to potential lead in drinking water. Elyrians are encouraged to visit www.epa.gov/lead to learn more about these recommendations. All notifications sent to Elyria water customers will also include this list of recommendations.

Water customers are encouraged to read these notices carefully. Should residents choose to take action the letters will include information on potential financial assistance, as well as contact information to help answer any further questions.
