ELYRIA, OH – The City of Elyria is working with downtown building owners to identify structural issues and develop plans to ensure the safety of walkers and drivers.
“Winter is in full swing in northeast Ohio,” said Assistant Safety Service Director – City Transformation & Resident Services, Kevin Brubaker. “And it’s no secret that buildings, roads and sidewalks suffer the inevitable effects of fluctuating temperatures and damp conditions. As a
result, some of our older buildings and sidewalks, especially those in the downtown area, are in need of safety upgrades and repairs.”
The building owner has blocked portions of sidewalks and streets in question until the issues can be resolved. These include:
- Street barricades near Uncle Vics, located at 11 Kerstetter Way
- Sidewalk barricades in the area of Depot Street
While these safety measures are being put into place, the City plans to convene a group of stakeholders to spearhead the City’s downtown improvement efforts.
“My hope is for our constituents to come to expect that we will engage the appropriate people in decisions that affect our great City, and that we will come up with sustainable solutions not in isolation, but together.”
Mayor Whitfield will be convening a meeting with building owners, business owners, building department personnel and others later this month. Updates on their progress will be shared through local media, the City’s website, and social media.
